Reggie Responds to Wii U Criticism

Reggie Responds to Wii U Criticism
In an interview with the globe and mail Reggie Fils-Aime talks about the Wii U and E3.
Here is Reggie’s response to the question of the Wii U’s product lifecycle in comparison to Microsoft and Sony’s next gen consoles:
“Three comments. First, it’s not about power. If it was about power, then the GameCube would have been the number one system in its generation and the Wii wouldn’t have been the number one system in this last generation. It is not about power. It is about fun, it is about the experience.
Second. Our competitors can say what they want about some super long cycle, but let’s see what their behaviours are.
Thirdly, the way development works is that the longer developers work with a system, the better they can tune performance. Case in point: Look at the very first GameCube games, and compare them to a game like Resident Evil 4. It was graphically beautiful, and demonstrably more advanced than the first GameCube games.
The same was true for Wii. A great example is Super Mario Galaxy 2. The graphics are just beautiful. And look at the motion control we were able to achieve in The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword.
The longer developers work on a system the more they tune it, the more they push the system, the more they learn tricks to really optimize performance. I share this because what you see here at E3 are games that represent a relatively short amount of development time. Imagine what we’ll see two years from now when developers have been working with Wii U longer and learn how to push everything out of the system.
Our competitors will do what they want. From our perspective, this is the right time to launch a new piece of hardware. And, the fun, the capabilities, and the experiences that we’re offering today with a second screen are demonstrably better than what can be done today on other platforms.”

  1. Slacker says:

    yes i agree with him

  2. Game Cube Resident evil 1 and ZER0 <3

  3. true very true. but a lot of people who bought the wii don’t play it anymore. but i still do and i hate people who criticize it,

  4. “It is not about power. It is about fun.” most of people forget this truth

  5. The important thing Reggie fails to mention when it comes to power is that they won’t be getting a lot of third party games if it isn’t powerful enough, just like the Wii. Nobody’s asking that it be a powerhouse or beating out the next Microsoft and Sony system, just that it be able to compete with it.

    • Wii U Prophet says:

Okay listen Zzyzx you sometimes are positive about the Wii U but mostly you are the most negative thing that ever roamed. You are a doubter and this is the first time I half agree with you. And the thing I dont agree with is that you the Wii U is going to be a powerhouse, I can tell. How else could you video chat in the quality of the best games. The video chat is even better quality than Resident Evil: 4 which in my opinion is one of the best game there is, and Wii U is about to top those best games. Learned your lesson? If you haven’t there probably isn’t hope for you.

    • Maverick-Hunter says:

So explain to me how a system that’s more powerful than xbox 360 and ps3 not powerful enough

And it will be able to beat whatever Sony and ms have up their selves because now nintendo has a powerful system + a whole new way of playing, the only way they stand a chance is if they copy nintendo (ms-smartglass/Sony ps vita) my case in point nintendo will always be number one when it comes to the three

  6. a pinoy says:

Reggie is right, i mean look at madworld it became popular not for the graphics its popular cause its fun. i preety much agree what nopo said about it gamers these days changed alot unlike before back in the day when people love his nes couse its fun i mean if nintendo is making it more powerfull than making it more fun they might have gune banckrupt or something worse. in fact nintendo haters can hate nintendo all they want but they must khow nintendo makes stunningly amazing consoles and games and after all nintendo did save us from the 1980s couse without them gaming will be extinct but at the same time Zzyzx comment is in a way correct for wii is struggling with third party game like mw3 and at times the nfs series. if i was Reggie i could think of ways to make the wii u a powerhouse that can amaze hardcore gamers and third party games but can also be fun for everyone from children to adults and at the same time for casual gamers.

  7. Quit the bs Reggie. Just gives us our beloved nintendo franchises in glorious hd. The system has the power now. No more excuses about graphics and power. Gamecube wasn’t as popular as the wii, but it was hands down a better system.

  8. simon yan duquette says:

where is the game epic franchise like killer instinct i think your work i good but it could be better make epic you can do it

  9. Maverick-Hunter says:

I for one completely agree with Reggie what’s the point of having all this hours power if the system isn’t fun for example the new god of war and the new devil may cry new titles yes anything eye popping besides graphics nope not that I could see.

Personally I would like to see black ops 2 on the wii u with time to develop for the wii u that game could be ground breaking. Same could be said about another metroid game. I also would like to see the wii u really put the machines effort into super smash bros and really blow playstation all stars out of the water :)

Personally I could careless about graphics I mean yes it’s nice to have hd for a change but honestly you don’t need graphics that good to play games, as a nintendo fan I never have needed them nor ever really wanted them but they are nice to have :)

    • Alpha Kennywoe man says:

Dude, the sequel to super smash bros. has barely started development and its already blown playstation al stars outa the water… I mean it is getting so much criticism for being the ripoff of super smash bros. that it is.

      • a pinoy says:

Agreed PSAS (sorry the name was long) was a huge facepalm.one thing for sure super smash bros is so cool.I cant wait to see it hd.

  10. Wii U Prophet says:

Is there a possibility that there could be more than one handheld controller? Because I was thinking that it would be unfair. Two be doing a two player game where you have the handheld and your bud has the remote. Let me use this example. You ask your bud to go play your new Wii U with you, thinking you’ll have a blast because after all its the newest console and was supposed to be the best around. Then you pull out a racing game because you’re excited. The game would be something like “Burnout 4″, “Need For Speed”, or maybe even something more classic or casual. But lets just say its Burnout 3. You start your Wii U and select your game. You select multi-player and the question comes up “Who gets the the handheld?”. If you’re a selfish person you keep it to yourself, but if you’re a good, giving person you probably will give it to your bud. But then you start. I would give the handheld to my friend so I would be crashing into cars and going off cliffs, where as my bud would be smoking me and having a nitro bar that is huge. Where is the fun in that. With a remote you would probably suck. Isn’t the Wii U supposed to be an advancement in social gaming? you probably would turn you Wii U off and be mad you ever bought it. Sure there would probably be great single-player games but what about the part of Wii U’s name Wii or we. It should represent “all the good times “Wii” had together” as quoted in the E3 thing. Sure, there is a “U” in Wii U, but it was supposed to be a “social console”. This is a big problem I see because many will discover this and also be in despair because the new Wii U was “supposed to be the best”. I have nothing against the Wii U and Nintendo. In fact, I am a loyal Nintendo fan and love the idea of the Wii U and fully support it, but there are many flaws. Although this is good for that candy eating game they are making, it is not a multi-player console. It seems there is only one way they have that is half fair, to use two different systems. And I know I’m not buying three Wii U’s for my family. I wish I could but i have a budget and the Wii U is reported to cost anywhere from 300 to 400$. That’s between 900 and 1200$ to spend on my family. Now I’d be perfectly happy to buy one Wii U and three handheld controllers and possibly a few games. That would make me happy. But I guess they don’t feel like putting in a special censor to your Wii U and controllers. I probably wont buy one now that I thought of this. I only ask that the user Wii U will comment on this. What do you think??? Hmmm…

    • Yes, the Wii U will be compatible with two of the Wii U control pads.

Multiplayer games will likely make use of fewer features on the touch screen if they expect more than two people to play at the same time, and what features that will be implemented will not make for any type of handicap gameplay wise.

Third, how do you get to $900 to $1200 for your family to have the Wii U? Are your children so spoiled that they can’t share with one another? (I think back to the episode of the Simpsons when Bart stole BONESTORM, and saw the kid who’s mom bought him a copy, then proceeded to buy a second copy for his sister since he was preemptively not sharing.)

    • Maverick-Hunter says:

Well honestly it sounds like you haven’t played with one yet. Because, your wrong it’s totally a multiplayer platform. In multiplayer they make it where the wii u can help the other 4 that are playing or you can do 4 vs 1 where the 1 has an advantage over the 4. It’s fun honestly it is, just give it more time remember this is a whole new system meaning a whole new way to program stuff so just give them time they’ll develop real cool stuff I promise.

  11. Some Nintendo fans don’t want to belive that Nintendo is releasing the Wii u
as always, I’ll just wait and see .

    • Maverick-Hunter says:

Any true nintendo fan can see clearly why the wii u is going to dominate the next gen wars

  12. Acierblade says:

My step brother its having a fit because he said nintendo needs to with more on family fun games (multiplayer). He claims that they are not doing enough to create something new. What he doesn’t know is that nintendo goes by a rule. Always make something new. The new controller is not what even I had thought (thank God) which was overgrown bottom screen of a 3ds. But in reality, it is an incredible advancement in multiplayer, worldwide and local, interaction. Nintendo is also not losing focus on what they are known for, obviously multiplayer. They are not working on hardcore games. Nintendo has the same people on the same types of games. But what they are doing is making a system so spectacular it can be equally incredible in fun family friendly games as in hardcore games made by the companies known for making those games (ex. Ubisoft). Wiiu is going to be… A system, fit for the true king of gaming.

  13. Stop bashing Nintendo, and take a moment to watch this video from BROD30′s, a very good explanation of the Wii-U hardware specs… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OcnsG11MRE8

  14. Lloyd "Psyloh" Bickford says:

If the video game industry were about power and graphics, rather than fun, experience and gameplay, then games like “Angry Birds” would never have made it as far as thy can, and do.

Thats my favorite thing about Nintendo; they seem to understand this far better than Microsoft and Sony put together.

  15. ajrawrwiiuftw says:

wow, this is awesome, a company that doesnt say “no comment” to every question and actually addresses the competition. kudos to you nintendo. the wii u will be awesome.
