Nintendo Neglected Core Audience

Nintendo Neglected Core Audience

At a recent investor Q & A, Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata spoke quite frankly about the issues Nintendo is currently struggling with, freely admitting that Nintendo didn’t make enough effort to retain its core gaming audience. He also claimed this is something Nintendo is looking to rectify with the Wii U and the 3DS.

According to Iwata — gaming as an industry is in better shape as a result of Nintendo’s efforts to expand the gaming population, and Nintendo should continue trying to grow its market base, but not at the expense of those for whom gaming is a “hobby”.

“[T]he Wii was able to reach a large number of new consumers who had never played games before by bringing hands-on experiences with its “Wii Sports” and “Wii Fit,”” said Iwata. “However, we could not adequately create the situation that such new consumers played games frequently or for long, consistent periods. As a result, we could not sustain a good level of profit.

“Moreover, regrettably, what we prioritized in order to reach out to the new audience was a bit too far from what we prioritized for those who play games as their hobby. Consequently, we presume some people felt that the Wii was not a game system for them or they were not willing to play with the Wii even though some compelling games had been released.”

According to Iwata, Nintendo doesn’t want to make the same mistake twice.

“Once consumers have a notion that “this system is not for us,” we have learned that it is extremely difficult to change their perceptions later,” claimed Iwata. “Therefore, in promoting the Nintendo 3DS and the Wii U, we have announced that we would like “width” and “depth” to coexist. With the Nintendo DS and the Wii, the approach of “width” was well accepted by many people; however, what we did in terms of “depth” was not satisfactory for some consumers. This time, we would like consumers to be satisfied in both aspects.”

But, interestingly, Iwata believes Nintendo should focus on ‘depth’ first, and broadening the market second.

“[We]e started to work on the “depth” aspect first, and the current and existing software you can see for the Nintendo 3DS is based on that idea.”

Interesting — but if Nintendo wants to appeal to a ‘core’ audience with the Wii U, why attach the Wii name to the product? It’s possible that the strength of the Wii brand is too difficult to ignore, but I wonder if some gamers will avoid the console simply because of that attachment. Time will tell.

  1. Do you mean there will not be alot if 1st party games or not alot of casual games i dont mind not alot of casual but first party i die without zelda

  2. Wow, this is surprisingly straightforward and honest from the CEO of Nintendo. In other words, they focused too much on the casual gaming market which didn’t spend much time playing or buying their games to make any kind of profit and as a result they neglected the ‘core’ audience, despite some stellar first-party games and exclusives for their system.

Hopefully he stands by his statement. Usher in a new SNES-type era. According to one of the chief editors at Gametrailers the Wii U is supposed to have a really incredible launch line-up (though he couldn’t speak much on)

A good start would be with a name change….seriously.

No way are you serious :O

      • RockD79 says:

That’s what I heard too. Epic is keeping a lid on it until the engine is ready. What a lot of naysayers dont realize is that the Wii U was built around the developers proposals to Nintendo. For the first time developers opinions and suggestions were used in creating the Wii U. The system is gonna rock. Its gonna be a new Wii or if they do change the name it will likely carry a new casing as well. Only time will tell. June 5th…

Well I never thought I see the day… If nintendo pulls this off consider the console wars over, nintendo would head into another super nintendo era where they take their rightful place as king so thanks for keeping the seat warm xbox lol

      • Right? I feel like I just got a headache from reading that.

        • I’m 10 give me a break come on and i think it will be called u nes

          • Well here is your spelling lesson for the day if there is a red squiggly line under your words, you spelled that one wrong. Try again. If you spell it wrong again, try opening up a second tab/window and type in the word into the search bar. 9 times out of 10 the internet will make the save.

I am a horrible speller, but with all the tools they give us, it just takes a sec to fix them.

  6. Ultimate nes? That would be kick ass!!!

  7. in a perfect world the would market it as a hardcore machine then wait for componets to get cheaper then call it the wii.

snes2, ultra, should all be case mods for the nes 8.

  9. a pinoy says:

maybe they will call the wii u based on the original name of the wii the NINTENDO REVOLUTION since many people seem to love Microsoft or Sony better than nintendo

  10. Michael Ponder Jr says:

Yeah i do hope a name change is in the works…. Wii was always annoying… i miss when they were gonna call the Wii the Revolution, but said it was “too rough sounding” or something like that… it was too much for the casual audience they were trying to get i guess.
