2010 Sony Patent Reveals Similarities To Wii U
Venturebeat have found a 2010 patent filed by Sony which has striking similarities to that of the Nintendo Wii U.
Some extracts from the Patent below:
“A system for augmented video, the system comprising: a video source configured to provide video content to a video display; and a mobile device with an integrated video camera and display, the mobile device configured to: track a relative distance and direction of the video display using the video camera; determine a position coordinate of the mobile device using the tracked relative distance and direction; and render, on the integrated display, an object in a position based on the determined position coordinate of the mobile device.”
“A method for augmenting video, comprising: receiving a first position coordinate corresponding to a first user, the first position coordinate relative to a first video display; receiving a first view direction corresponding to the first user, the first view direction relative to the first video display; receiving a second position coordinate corresponding to a second user, the second position coordinate relative to a second video display; determining a direction and range from the first position coordinate to the second position coordinate; and rendering, on an integrated display of a first mobile device, an object based on the determined direction and range from the first position coordinate to the second position coordinate and based on the received first view direction. ”

There has been continual comparison by developers between the Nintendo Wii U and The Playstation Vita, this patent could further reinforce those comparisons. In an interview with NowGamer, Naughty Dog game director Justin Richmond even went as far as to say the Vita will be just as capable as the Wii U ; “To be honest with you, the idea of it is very, very cool. But there’s nothing that the Wii U has that the Vita and PS3 doesn’t,”You know, it’s an interesting piece of technology, and I’m interested to see how people use it”, sad Richmond.
It will be interesting to see both products performance and functionality in their completed stage.

Snake, you say that Sony had this particular technology since 2001 and then ranted on about their web camera for PlayStation…yet this article wasn’t even talking about web camera technology. We’re specifically talking about the technology of the secondary screen device. While Sony ran and got a patent for this design in 2010, Nintendo started working on this design in 2008. And don’t call someone a fool being foolish yourself.

While they both do look very similar tech wise there is one thing maybe two things that I want to point out. 1 playstation has been using awesome graphics since well forever and supplying me with characters that just didnt impress me like the guy from uncharted. While nintendo has not used hd graphics to wow me instead they used character development and awesome gameplay so I much rather see my childhood Heros in 1080p vs who ever playstation can dish out. 2 playstaion can’t make a good game at all they arent difficult the stories aren’t that impressive as a matter a fact if not for the graphics Sony wouldn’t even have me as a customer. While nintendo has made better games time and time again souly by focusing on gameplay story and characters therefore I predict that nintendos wii u will demolish Sonys playstation vita in sales.
I’m not bashing the vita I’m sure it’s a great machine and it’s going be successful. I’m just saying nintendo now has a machine that can stand toe to toe maybe even better than the ps3 an vita only difference is nintendo is still the best at making video games so I in all honesty i don’t expect Microsoft or Sony to stand a chance this year I mean the only advantage they ever really had was having a better ship
I don’t see why this was posted since it doesn’t actually have anything to do with the Wii U.
Yes, Sony has filed a patent for a similar set-up to the Wii U, but that’s really where it ends. Besides the end product of having two screens, this is very different in implementation to the Wii U which is not using a stand-alone mobil device.
I disagree that the Wii U and PS3/Vita combo are going to have the same capabilities unless developers are restricting themselves to the similarities between the two. Sure some games could be used on both platforms with little difference, but I doubt that only 1st party or exclusive games are going to be the only ones who showcase features that would be imposible on the other. Note how I am not using any specific examples in either case.
I really tire of all the blind fandom, why can’t we all just enjoy the fact that such leaps in technology have come so quickly to allow us to become more fully immersed in our games. It was not long ago that such vivid graphics, sound, and control methods were a fantasy.
I disagree with Mayor that Sony and Microsoft don’t make any good games, but I do agree that Nintendo has a much better record of making engrossing games which are focused on gameplay #1, and everything else as a secondary priority. The bigger difference is the sheer number of awesome 3rd party games found on their consoles.
Nintendo needs to do a better job of getting 3rd party producers and developers on board if they want to succeed.

This is not big news. I believe that most people with some shadow of sense understand that this is quite the norm. I think we should all get used to the ever eternal battle between Sony and Nintendo fan boys. It would seem that all Sony does is come out with “plastic” toys, so to speak. Not to demotivate their progress to mere toys, but the truth is that none of these inventions have been strikingly successful. Nintendo’s ideas have always been innovative, but their image is slurred by the lack of good third party support. I would compare their ideas to “iron,” but it is iron smeared with a bad name. Hopefully the Wii U will be something Nintendo can be both proud, and confident in. Oh , and Sony should probably try a new strategy for the PS4… saying that Masaru Ibuka had an amazing idea and used telepathy to communicate with Howard Stringer, so that he could commission Masaya Matsuura to produce it.

Transfering into the wii we lost a lot of avaliability to big game names. The only ones i am truly upset about are the rpgs and other high story games (oblivion, ninja gaiden etc. ) with the controls matchong other systems better there is the slight chance to see elder scrOlls six on a nintendo which would be a big acheivement in gaming history. Nintendo already possesses 90% of the most iconic characters and the best rpgs around. Wii will win as soon as those games cross over. Oh and cod can go die in a hole. Preferably a long dark one with spikes on the bottom.

Guys, guys…. Don’t fight. Look, I love Nintendo, I owned a Wii until recently that I got a PS3. I’m not a Nintendo fanboy neither a Sony fanboy. Both systems are GREAT. Nintendo always gave me such good times with Metroid, Mario and Zelda. And Sony got some things up it’s sleeves too. God Of War, Twisted Metal, Heavy Rain, Little Big Planet….
Yeah, sometimes it feels like a company is stealing from another, but c’mon, fighting about those things it’s pointless. Let’s enjoy what we have and be happy. A friend of mine got the Vita and it looks and feels TERRIFINGLY AWESOME. I don’t think I’ll buy one (I’m no handheld guy), I want the wiiU specifically to play original Wii Games on HD. But I do feel the Vita will kick some ass, and so will the WiiU.
